It had been 10 years since I earned my associate degree, and I was unsure if I would be able to handle the coursework. To my surprise, my experience has been filled with much assurance, learning, and growth. I have been enriched by every professor that I have met.
After spending over 30 years in various roles, building skills but lacking the formal credentials to advance, Mercer’s Human Resource Administration and Talent Development program has helped me finally align my passion for learning and development with a solid academic path.
After spending 15 years in the auto insurance industry, my career took an unexpected turn when I was laid off. Instead of viewing this as a setback, I chose to view it as an opportunity to realign my career with my true passion—talent development. That decision led me to Mercer University’s Human Resources Administration and Talent Development program, which has been both transformative and rewarding.
Choosing to pursue the Human Resources Administration and Talent Development program was a pivotal decision in my life, and looking back, I couldn’t be more grateful for the experience. As a first-time college student at 48, I initially felt intimidated. I questioned if I belonged in a classroom after so many years away from my high school education. However, this program quickly proved that education has no age limit. It’s about determination, growth, and the desire to make an impact.
I began the B.S. in Human Resources Administration and Development program totally blinded as to how it would impact my future. Initially, I was insecure of how going back to college after more than ten years would affect me. After my first semester at Mercer, I immediately gained the confidence I needed to strive and meet my educational goals.
Mercer has prepared me to be a critical thinker and collaborate with others to achieve a common goal. The professors in the Human Resources program keep students up-to-date on new trends, technologies, and laws.
Mercer has prepared me by giving me the tools needed to achieve a successful career. The administration concentration of the B.S. in Human Resources program focused on areas like ethics and workplace law and relations, so I have the knowledge to learn how to perform in an employee relations role specifically.
My job depends on me to be personable, professional, friendly, and empathic. I often have one-on-one sessions with parents and sometimes group work sessions which enable me to use the motivation and interpersonal skills that I learned at Mercer in the Human Resources Administration and Development program. I am better able to communicate with parents to help them help themselves solve their own problems with the information and resources that I provide to them.
