Dr. Arla Bernstein holds degrees in mass communication, geography/urban and environmental planning and geography/urban and economic planning. She has been recognized as a Service Learning Faculty Fellow: Senior Associate Award by the Atlanta Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning. She received the International Public Relations Research Conference Top Paper Award for her paper on ethnic differences in participative public relations in community planning.

Research and professional interests
Dr. Bernstein’s research and presentations include the exploration of civic-minded scholarship in communication courses, service learning in communication courses, and gender in political engagement and political credibility. Teaching and research interests also include critical thinking, community narratives, and strategic communication.
Recent publications
Her research appears as book chapters and as articles in journals including the Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, Communication Quarterly, Sex Roles, Women and Language, and Journal of Urban Affairs.
